The Context
A small educational organization with 7 employees develops an original case study around a fictional trial. The story features a former tutor, a carpenter's son who became secretary to a Parisian aristocrat, now accused of attempted murder of the mayor's wife in his hometown.
This pedagogical scenario focuses on studying social tensions during the French Restoration. Students take on the role of literary investigators tasked with reconstructing and analyzing this dramatic journey, from social ascension to final downfall.
The Problem
How do we analyze the mechanisms that lead a brilliant but prideful individual to their downfall? The simulation questions the opposition between personal ambitions and social constraints, between strategic calculations and sincere impulses.
Students must decipher the complex interactions between the protagonist and their environment: the mayor's wife, gentle but passionate, the proud and romantic Parisian aristocrat, or the childhood friend who became a timber merchant, remaining loyal despite everything. Each character reveals a different facet of the era's social tensions.
The Stakes
This simulation-based approach develops students' critical thinking and analytical skills. By taking on the role of investigators, they deepen their understanding of literary mechanisms while developing their argumentative competencies.
The method promotes active engagement of learners in text analysis. Rather than passively receiving a lecture, they progressively build their interpretation through investigation. This collaborative approach also strengthens teamwork and oral communication skills.
